Range of Motion
They're not redundant — they solve different movement problems. A slider gives you smooth linear movement over a short, fixed distance (typically 60cm–1.5m), which is ideal for product shots, subtle reveals, and parallax moves where the camera stays roughly in one place. A gimbal gives you free-roaming 3D movement — walking shots, following a subject across a room, descending stairs — that a slider physically cannot do because it's bolted to a fixed rail. If your shot list includes any walking or subject-following coverage, a slider alone won't get you there regardless of how creatively you use it.
