If you can only buy one thing, buy a slider first, not a gimbal. A decent 80–100cm slider costs $150–$400, needs no learning curve, and nails the single most useful move for talking-head interviews, product shots, and establishing shots: a slow, controlled push or reveal. A gimbal is more versatile on paper, but a $300 consumer gimbal produces footage that reads as "gimbal-y" — a subtle floaty drift that trained eyes spot immediately — until you've put in real practice hours. A slider has almost no ceiling on quality because there's no electronics to fight; the limit is your own blocking.
Dolly comes third for a beginner: it solves the same problem as a slider but needs track, floor prep, and usually two people. Save it until you're shooting on sets with time to rig track.
